Subject: JH phone call
Contemporaneous notes of a telephone conversation between a journalist (XX) and John Hemming – Saturday 30.05.15.
JH: "I spoke to the police in Staffordshire about a month ago saying I had been told by people (Andy Lavery) that this was all about Graham Wilmer wanting to get back on the child sex abuse panel, and he was making all this up because he had been removed from it."
XX: "He admitted that the Sunday Times had contacted him and denied he was planning to publicly issue a statement under his own name."
JH: "I .told Tom Harper I don't want to be named.. I am quite desperate about not wanting to be named. I don't mind
talking about it but I really don't want to be named... It might be true I was making a statement to Tom but anonymously.
"The problem is that it comes down to the identity - anything that goes down that route. My name has been floated around the media for many months
"I am blaming Graham Wilmer for all this . My understanding about this, and I got this not just from talking to the media and the police, if they were serious about this being an offence, they would have talked about it to the police well before they talked to the media.
"They should have talked to the police first and allowed them to investigate before it. became public"
XX: "I made the point that the investigation was still a scoping exercise, and he said:
JH: "As far as i know, it is not a proper investigation. If the police had allegations against me they would tell me about it. This has gone on now for month or so, and the police have not told me of any allegations. It all sounds a bit surreal.
"I contacted the police to say I believed there was a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice about to be committed. If you have evidence of a serious crime is being committed you should report them to the police not Sky News. I don't think she did her case any good, but then if your rational is to try and get the Home Secretary to reinstate Graham Wilmer on the panel, that is different.
"If your primary objective is to get the police to investigate people, then they are not going about it the best way."
XX: "I interjected that, surely this would not get him back on the panel? He said that if I contacted Graham Wilmer, I might be able to get him to say this.
"I then pressed him on whether he had made a complaint to Staffordshire police. He said "I raised concerns that evidence against me was about to be manufactured, whether or not it is a fantasy or a fabrication is difficult to work out."
"Oddly enough, I had been told there were allegations about me in Staffordshire. I have never had business in Staffordshire in my life.
"To be honest, it is a load of crap. It is the sort of thing I think I would litigate over, even if you narrowed it down to 'a former Liberal Dem MP', there are only two in the West Midlands. People start saying who is the closest?
"You are narrowing down the group quite substantially. I normally don't litigate but this sort of thing I will litigate."
XX:" I told him i shall pass this on to my editor. He said " If you stick tot he world politician you are not taking any chances. There are not many MPs who. have lost of their seats in that region so, if you say a former MP, I'd rather you stick to a politician because then I have a cat in hell's chance of people not filming me and saying this is all a pile of pile of shit.
"It is not appropriate because these are all awful allegations."
XX: "I then put it to him that someone else had come forward, not connected with Graham Wilmer, alleging a similar situation against him?
"He said: "Is that someone else or naming me?", I said "Naming you".
"Well, I don't know what is going on there. I know who is behind a certain set of assertions (eg Graham Wilmer), but in this case, apart from saying no, there is enough in this to say what is alleged is complete bullshit.
"I can't deal with vague sort of information. I HAVE NOT COMMITTED CRIMINAL SEXUAL OFFENCES.
"This is one of your difficulties in being reasonably high profile - some idiot somewhere would say this... where
do you go with all this? It is not easy to do.
"Some of the Jersey stuff over the years have got lots of evidence and lots of history to it, but difficult, and then you had the Hampstead case which is obviously..wrong.
"So here we are - I don't want to be identified. I don't want to go close to being identified. As soon as you start this it becomes quite a big thing and to try and remove the taint to some of this is quite difficult - please stick with
'politician'. You have always got my mobile no.
he then added if Esther had wanted to do something she could always issue her statement to the police to be
XX: "I said 'well she did go public.' He said "It's all about publicity, not the original situation. It is all about trying
to get back on this panel. I have seen this - you could probably stand that up if you try and speak to him.
"You say: 'what's your view on membership of the panel? Should you go back on the panel?' He might give you the answer that stands it up.
"JH: "I have got this from members of the survivor community. There is a massive row going on - allegations by one faction a small, faction that is a noisy faction have made allegations against me. It is complete shit to have it happening.
"All allegations should be properly investigated by the police - it should not be operated through press releases, which it is now.
"To be fair she may have been abused but it wasn't by me. I was in a sense nowhere even close. It all sounds odd to me."
XX: "He queried how old Esther really is - saying her photo showed her looking older than 32.
"He said that she may well have been abused by people, but Wilmer took the opportunity to blame me. I see her being manipulated by Wilmer - not you can't print that - just say being manipulated by others. I don't see this being driven by her, I see it being driven by someone else.."
"I am happy to talk, but not to be identified."
